Alberta Pig Handling Facility Tests Positive for Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea

October 30, 2014 During the ongoing surveillance activities being conducted by Alberta Pork in collaboration with the Alberta government, Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) has been detected at a pig-handling facility in Alberta. This environmental sample was not taken from a farm or a sick animal. There are no reported cases of PED in pigs in Alberta. The positive sample was taken from an office space. Other samples taken in high pig traffic areas at the same site, such as the loading dock and scales, came back negative. Alberta Pork is working closely with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) and the facility to investigate the situation and keep producers informed. Together, we have been preparing for the possibility of PED for months. A plan is in place to reduce the risk of the spread of the disease, investigate and manage the situation. PED is a highly contagious viral disease of swine that causes vomiting, diarrhea and high death loss in pigs. It was first reported in Canada in ...

Pork Producers Advised to Step Up Communication to Reduce Risk of Spreading PED

October 24, 2014 (from Farmscape.ca) Saskatchewan’s chief veterinary officer is calling for increased communication among pork producers and their service providers to help reduce the potential for spreading Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea. With the onset of colder weather the survivability of the virus responsible for Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea increases. Dr. Betty Althouse, the Chief Veterinary Officer with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, says while Saskatchewan remains free of PED the virus is circulating in parts of the Canadian swine herd as well as in the U.S. and once an operation becomes infected the risk of the virus spreading increases dramatically. "As herds are positive during the acute phase they do shed a lot of virus and the virus is detected outside the barns as well around those barns so that anybody going onto those sites whether they’re employees or service providers or feed trucks delivering they risk getting their vehicles contaminated and then can drive ...

Hog Farms Hard Hit by PED Virus

October 6, 2014 (from the Red Deer Advocate) Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus continues to devastate hog farms, especially in the United States. But Alberta remains PED-free, confirms Egan Brockhoff, biosecurity co-ordinator with Alberta Pork and a partner with Prairie Swine Health Services of Red Deer. "The entire U.S. herd has been so dramatically affected," said Brockhoff during an Alberta Pork teleconference on Friday. "They're currently reporting 8,500 PED cases." Thirty-one states have had positive PED tests, he said, including all of the major pork producing states. About 50 new sites in the U.S. test positive for the disease every week. Asian countries like Japan have also been affected, said Brockhoff. "There's no question that it continues to move throughout the pig world in a very significant way." Earlier this week, Manitoba's chief veterinary officer confirmed his province's fifth on-farm case of PED. The virus had been ...
