Pork Producers Commit Levy Funds to Increase Swine Health Collaboration

December 30, 2014 Canadian pork producers continue to make swine health a priority by committing producer levies to fund a national animal health initiative.  The focus for the national animal health initiative will be to bring key players together to collaborate on efforts across Canada that limit the spread of viruses like PEDv, increase communication and monitor surveillance activities. “I am pleased with the provincial pork board’s unanimous response to CPC’s recommendation to back a national animal health initiative,” stated CPC’s Chair, Jean Guy Vincent. “There is no pause in the fight to safe guard the health status of our industry.” CPC has received support from its members to fund a National Swine Health initiative to continue to build on all of the work that has been done over the past few years. Pork Producers, Transporters Advised to Implement Cold Weather Disinfection Procedures

December 19, 2014 (from Farmscape.ca) A Red Deer based swine veterinarian is advising pork producers who do not have access to heated facilities for disinfecting transport vehicles to return to cold weather disinfection protocols. Transportation equipment remains one of the greatest risks for spreading the virus responsible for Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea. Dr. Egan Brockhoff, a swine veterinarian with Red Deer based Prairie Swine Health Services, told those participating in an Alberta Pork PED telephone town hall meeting Friday freezing temperatures impact the effectiveness of the disinfectants used to kill the virus. "Many of those disinfectants need about 60 minutes of contact time to ensure we have a good solid kill of this virus. Pork Producers Urged to Consider All High Hog Traffic Sites as PED Positive

December 15, 2014 (from Farmscape.ca) A Veterinary Epidemiologist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development is encouraging pork producers to treat all high hog traffic sites they visit as being PED positive. As part of Alberta's Environmental Surveillance Project regular weekly environmental surveillance is being conducted at two truck washes, three slaughter plants and three assembly yards across the province. Dr. Julia Keenliside, a Veterinary Epidemiologist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, told those participating in an Alberta Pork PED telephone town hall Friday over five thousand samples have been collected since January. "In the last month we've had one more swine delta coronvirus positive and it was at one site in an outdoor loading chute and the chute was cleaned as best as possible but in this weather it's getting harder and harder for people to clean so we do remind people that any of these high risk or high hog traffic sites could be positive ...

Another New Case of PED in Ontario Puts Producers on Guard

After almost 4 months with no new cases, Ontario has now reported 4 cases in the last month.

The latest case was reported yesterday in a finisher barn in Oxford County.

The increase in frequency of cases suggests the experts were right in predicting a PED spike with the onset of colder weather.

PED in Hawaii Suggests Contaminated Feed as the Vector for Spread

December 8, 2014 (from Farmscape.ca) The chair of Sask Pork says a case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea in Hawaii provides strong evidence that feed is a potential vector for the spread of the virus. U.S. Veterinarians are attempting to pinpoint the source of a case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea in Hawaii. Florian Possberg, the chair of the Saskatchewan Pork Development Board says PED likely got into Ontario by contaminated feed, perhaps Prince Edward Island as well and we still don't understand how an infection that's very similar to what was in China got into North America so this case in Hawaii suggests there's a very good chance that a contaminated feed ingredient was the vector. We do believe that some feed ingredients have a higher risk in terms of possibly carrying the PED virus. Stepped Up Biosecurity to Combat PED Reduces Other Disease Risks

December 5, 2014 (from Farmscape.ca) The Executive director of the Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative says efforts to contain PEDv are also reducing the threat posed by other infections. "Manure Application and PEDv, a Risk to be Managed" will be discussed Wednesday as part of Prairie Livestock Expo in Winnipeg. John Carney, the executive director of the Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative says PEDv has increased the focus of manure applicators on planning jobs, on training staff and on communicating with customers and they've stepped up their adherence to biosecurity. New Case of PED Reported in Ontario

December 4, 2014 After two quiet weeks, a new case of PED was reported yesterday in a finishing barn in the Niagara region of Ontario. That brings the total number of cases in Ontario to 66 This serves as a reminder that producers should treat all high pig-traffic sites and vehicles as potentially contaminated with the PED virus and/or SDCV. Producers must work closely with their livestock hauler to ensure all trucks are cleaned, disinfected and dried every time before entering a farm. If any truck tries to enter your farm that has not been cleaned, don’t let it in. It poses a serious risk for bringing PED or SDCV onto your farm and into your barn. Other biosecurity measures, such as cleaning and disinfecting load-out areas and requiring clean boots and clothing for all barn visitors, should also be strictly enforced. Uncertainty Over PED Expected to Result in Volatile Hog Markets Heading into 2015

December 1, 2014 (from Farmscape.ca) A financial services officer with AgStar Financial Services says the biggest influence affecting the North American hog market moving into 2015 will be whether or not we see an increase in the number of cases of PED as the weather turns colder. "Economic Trends and Challenges Facing the North American Pork Industry" was among the topics discussed recently in Saskatoon as part of Saskatchewan Pork Industry Symposium 2014. Justin Roelofs, a senior financial services officer with AgStar Financial Services, says although live hog prices have fallen from their record levels this past summer, the market is still strong.
