A PED Checklist for Participants in the Alberta Pork Telephone Town Hall August 22

August 22, 2014 In case you missed the announcement, Alberta Pork is holding its eighth Telephone Town Hall on Friday, August 22 at 10:30 am Mountain Time. We're pleased to announce that we have confirmed Ben Wooley, Vice-President of Sunterra Farms, as our special guest speaker. Ben will be talking about what he and his people are doing around biosecurity now and their plans for the fall. He also has a list of some key questions to ask yourself to make sure your biosecurity is as strong as possible.  Below is a copy of Ben's list. You may want to print it or have it on your computer screen tomorrow during the call to refer to as Ben goes over the questions.   Audit questions for PED prior to winter By Ben Wooley   Transport ·         Have you audited your truck wash and are they following yours and Alberta Pork’s biosecurity protocols? ·       &n ...

Evaluation of Contaminated Complete Feed as vehicle for PEDv Infection

August 18, 2014 Abstract Background: Since its initial detection in May 2013, porcine epidemic  diarrhea virus (PEDV) has spread  rapidly throughout the US swine industry. Initially, contaminated  feed was proposed as a risk factor for PEDV; however, data were not available to support this theory. Here we provide proof of concept of this risk by describing  a novel means for recovering PEDV-contaminated complete  feed material from commercial swine sites and conducting  an in vivo experiment to prove its infectivity. Results: For on-farm detection of PEDV RNA in feed, paint rollers were used to collect material from at-risk feed bins from 3 clinically affected breeding  herds. This material was tested by PCR and determined to be positive for PEDV-RNA (Ct = 19.50-22.20 range). To test infectivity,  this material was pooled  (Ct = 20.65) and a Treatment  group of 3-week old PEDV-naïve piglets  were allowed  to consume it via na ...

Hot Water Pressure Washing Shown Effective in Cleaning Swine Manure Application Equipment

August 11, 2014 (from Farmscape.ca) The executive director of the Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative says the use of hot water pressure washing equipment is helping custom swine manure applicators reduce the risk of spreading Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea. Biosecurity considerations for commercial swine manure applicators in light of PED was among the topics discussed as part of a water and nutrient management field day Friday at the University of Manitoba’s Glenlea Research Station. John Carney, the executive director of the Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative, reports we’re seeing a lot more interest in the use of hot water pressure washers. "Hot water works better than cold water for a number of reasons. It cleans faster so it’s quicker to use and because it cleans faster and is quicker to use it needs less water. Since you’re not crossing the line of separation, manure applicators wouldn’t go into the barn to get water. They’ ...

Paper Examines Role of Potentially Contaminated Feed as Source of First PED Cases in Canada

August 7, 2014

Dr. Soren Alexandersen has announced that work on PEDV Bioassay on imported spray dried plasma involved in introduction of PED into Canada has now been published online.

Among other things, it includes the following statement:

"Despite the fact that the tested PEDV genome positive feed did not result in obvious piglet infection in our  bioassay experiment, contaminated  feed cannot  be ruled out as a likely source of this introduction in the field where many other variables may play a contributing  role."

Reviewing the Latest Alberta Pork Telephone Town Hall

August 5, 2014

Last week, Alberta Pork hosted the eighth in a series of Telephone Town Halls on Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED). In addition to a comprehensive update on the disease both globally and locally from noted PED expert Dr. Egan Brockhoff, there were some fascinating discussions on the use of porcine plasma and the recent appearance of a PED vaccine in the United States.

While PED is not in the headlines as much these days, Dr. Brockhoff pointed out that the need for vigilance in biosecurity is as great as ever. There are still 100 cases a week being reported in the United States, and the positive feed sample in Alberta recently, while it was detected before it could reach a farm, indicates that PED did enter our province. As well, Dr, Brockhoff and other experts feel there is a real chance of an upswing in PED come the fall and winter.

For a complete recording or transcript of this telephone town hall, check the PED portal of the Alberta Pork website next week.
