You're Invited! Alberta Pork Telephone Town Hall this Friday

January 26, 2015 The Economics of PED   It's a new year, but with 9 new cases of PED already in 2015, including one in Manitoba, the threat continues. For Canadian producers, one benefit of the disease has been increased pork prices. And given the chance to earn more dollars, keeping your farm disease-free only makes sense. So what now? How has PED impacted prices and what does the future hold for producers' pocketbooks?    For answers to those questions and key PED updates, please join us for our next Telephone Town Hall on Friday, January 30 at 10:30 am Mountain Time. Our expert panel includes: - Dr. Egan Brockhoff, Alberta Swine Veterinarian, Prairie Swine Health Services in Red Deer. - Dr. Julia Keenliside, Veterinary Epidemiologist, Alberta Agriculture & Rural Development. - Dr. Frank Marshall, Veterinarian, Marshall Swine Health Services. Our special guest this week: KEVIN GRIER, Kevin Grier Marketing & Consulti ...

Third Strain of PEDv Identified in U.S.

January 12, 2015 (from ThePigSite.com) US - Researchers at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have identified a third strain of the porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED) virus in the US. A third strain of the PED virus (PEDV) in the US has been reported by Douglas Marthaler of the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and others there and with the Swine Vet Center in Saint Peter. In a letter in the journal, 'Emerging Infectious Diseases', they explain that they sequenced the complete PEDV genome by using next generation sequencing to clarify the relationship between the US PEDV strains. Previously, the spike gene of the virus had been the main area sequenced. This work identified a new strain of the virus, which is called 'Minnesota188' or 'S2aa-del'. This is the third variant of the virus found in the US, following the original North American PED virus strains and the North American INDEL strains, which were first detected ...

New Year Brings 3 New Cases of PED in Quebec

January 7, 2014 Over the last two days, three new cases of PED have been reported in Quebec: The EQSP reported Quebec's third PED case occurring in two nurseries.  Oral fluid samples on Dec. 31st and yesterday were positive for PED.  The barns are part of a 7200 pig nursery and an 1800 pig finisher farm on two close sites in St-Denis-sur-Richelieu in Montérégie.  All pigs were sourced from a single farrowing unit in Ontario (reported by the CCVO) that is reported as not showing clinical signs of PED.  The owner is fully cooperative immediately putting the nursery sites under auto-quarantine. The EQSP then clarified that because the two barns in Quebec case number 3 were at different addresses (2 sites) they are considered case 3 and case 4.  A fifth case of PED was also reported today in a 1700 head finisher site in the same area.  The case is epidemiologically linked to the previous two cases. Update on the second Quebec case: The first load of sl ...
