Bird Deltacoronavirus Identified in Alberta

March 6, 2015 The National Centre for Animal Diseases (NCAD) in Winnipeg has detected a previously unreported bird deltacoronavirus in Alberta. This virus is reacting with the laboratory test used for detection of Porcine Deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) in Alberta.  PDCoV is also known as Swine Delta Coronavirus (SDCV). There have been a few positive tests for PDCoV in Alberta since October 2014, all from environmental samples taken in pig-‐handling facilities. Investigations have not identified any positive farms or cases of the disease in pigs. Previous research has identified other bird viruses that are closely related to PDCoV. Samples from sparrows in a facility with previous positive environmental tests for PDCoV were submitted to NCAD for virus identification. The positive PDCoV samples were taken as part of an environmental surveillance program for PDCoV and porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus that has been in operation in Alberta since January 2014. The program, ru ...

Truck and Trailer Wash Standards Still Highly Variable

Mar 6, 2015 (from The Pig Site) CANADA - A Red Deer based swine veterinarian reports the diligence with which livestock trailers are being washed and disinfected to reduce the potential spread of PED still varies widely, reports Bruce Cochrane. To help reduce the risk of spreading Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea, provincial pork organisations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, the Canadian Pork Council, and a team of western Canadian veterinarians have rolled out the Canadian Truck Wash Facility Registration Pilot Project. Dr Egan Brockoff, a swine veterinarian with Prairie Swine Health Services in Red Deer, explains over the past month auditors have been assessing truck wash facilities and truck wash procedures using a new tool developed late last year. Dr Egan Brockoff-Prairie Swine Health Services: We have found that there's lots of opportunity for improved education in the truck wash facilities but we found that the truck washes are very receptive. They want to learn and they ...

Canadian Truck Wash Facility Registration Pilot Project Helps Facilities Improve Biosecurity

March 2, 2015 (from Farmscape.ca) A pilot project underway in western Canada is helping livestock truck wash facilities step up biosecurity and improve their truck washing procedures to help reduce the risk posed by Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea. To help reduce the risk of spreading Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea provincial pork organizations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, the Canadian Pork Council and a team of western Canadian veterinarians have rolled out the Canadian Truck Wash Facility Registration Pilot Project. Any truck wash facility on the prairies that deals with swine livestock trailers is eligible to participate. Mark Fynn, an Animal Care Specialist with Manitoba Pork, explains collaborators developed assessment tools that standardize what we’re looking for in truck wash facilities and the procedures they’re using to ensure they are optimizing biosecurity and minimizing risk to clients. "We started off by setting up a collaborator group to develop these assessments ...
